Animal Collective – “Jimmy Mack” (Martha And The Vandellas Cover)
In 1967, the euphoric Motown group Martha And The Vandellas made it to #10 on the Hot 100 with their lovelorn-but-upbeat single “Jimmy Mack.” In their recent live shows, Animal Collective have been covering the song. And earlier this week, Animal Collective announced that they’ve got a new EP called The Painters coming out on Friday; we already posted opening track “Kinda Bonkers.” (That’s the EP cover art above.) The EP ends with a studio version of that cover, and it’s very strange to hear such a classically-assembled pop song run through that giddy, blurry Animal Collective filter. The Animal Collective’s version of the song recalls this dizzy joy of the Strawberry Jam era. Check it out below.
The Painters is out 2/17 on Domino.
