The London grime star Stormzy is known as one of the most intense and combustible rappers in his scene, but he showed another side during a recent session in the BBC Live Lounge. Bringing in fellow UK artists Wretch 32, MNEK, JHus, and Ghetts, he performed some of his slower, more dramatic tracks. And then, with a live band and a choir backing him up, Stormzy showed off his flat-but-expressive singing voice when he covered "Godspeed," the lovely gospel-inflected song from Frank Ocean's Blonde. It's a bold performance, and it works. As Pitchfork points out, the Frank Ocean cover starts at the 11:33 mark in the video below.
Stormzy's new album Gang Signs & Prayer is out now on Merky.
