Next month, Chastity Belt are releasing their third album, I Used To Spend So Much Time Alone, and we’ve heard “Different Now” and “Caught In A Lie” from it already. Today, they’re sharing another new song called “5am” — it’s the closing track from the album, and it’s a swirling but crisp denouement. It takes place during those late-night hours when you can’t stop thinking about all of your problems but there’s nothing you could possibly do to fix them in that moment, so instead you just sit and seethe and overthink everything. “Immediate urge to get everything all straight,” Julia Shapiro sings. “Need to express it, but it’s not the time or place.” The track is left unresolved, and who knows if they woke up and went about solving what was wrong or realized that the hang-up wasn’t that big of a deal in the first place or maybe even buried it down deeper to avoid confrontation. In any case, the takeaway is perfectly clear: “Communication’s pretty hard.” Listen below.
