Father John Misty Sings About James Comey, Fuels Pizzagate Theory
Isn’t it great when our greatest musicians really examine the issues of the day? Case in point: Yesterday afternoon, we got the news that Donald Trump had fired FBI director James Comey, the man who was in charge of investigating Trump’s associates and their ties to Russia. (Politico is now reporting what we all pretty much already knew: Trump fired Comey specifically because he didn’t like the Russia investigation.) And last night, a few hours after the news came out, Father John Misty posted himself singing a quick 53-second song about the whole episode. Sample lyrics: “James Comey was fired in the month of May / James Comey was fired from the CIA.” (It was the FBI, but that wouldn’t have sounded as good.) Here’s that video:

You’ll notice that the Mist, in that video, is singing his song while eating pizza. This is significant. Yesterday, our colleagues at SPIN uncovered the amazing news that some right-wing conspiracy theorists on the internet have connected Father John Misty with Pizzagate. Pizzagate, as you probably already know, is the bugshit-insane right wing conspiracy theory that various prominent Democrats are running a child-sex-slave ring out of a DC-area pizza parlor. They have taken some real leaps to keep that conversation going, and at least a few of them are now seeing the Mist as a figure in the whole story.

See, in 2012, the Mist’s “This Is Sally Hatchet” video takes place in a pizza parlor where there’s a hostage situation, and there’s a shot of a pizza cut into the shape of a pentagram. That video has since been removed from YouTube. And then there’s the Mist’s new “Total Entertainment Forever,” which stars Macaulay Culkin, a man who was once in a Velvet Underground cover band called the Pizza Underground. And now FJM is eating pizza in a video! It all connects!
