Melodrama Becomes Lorde’s First #1 Album
Lorde has scored her first #1 album with her second full-length, Melodrama. Per Billboard, the album earned 109,000 equivalent album units of which 82,000 were traditional album sales. Her 2013 debut, Pure Heroine, peaked at No. 3 with 129,000 copies sold in its first week. (This was before Billboard made the transition to factoring streaming and individual song sales into their chart calculations.)
As Billboard notes, Melodrama is the third album by a woman in a row that landed at #1 on the charts after top-spot debuts by Katy Perry (for Witness) and Halsey (for Hopeless Fountain Kingdom). The last time that happened was back in December 2012.
Congrats Lorde! You deserve it.
Soon after hearing the news, Lorde tweeted about what the #1 album designation means to her:

when i was a kid i thought big records had to be made a certain way—to be sterile & calculated in craft; that something had to be sacrificed
