Matt Mondanile Departed Real Estate Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations
Former Real Estate member Matt Mondanile, who records under the moniker Ducktails, has been accused of sexual misconduct. His alleged behavior is apparently what led to his departure from Real Estate in May of 2016. Mondanile co-founded the band alongside Alex Bleeker and Martin Courtney. When Real Estate announced Mondanile’s departure, they said he was leaving to “[focus] on his own Ducktails project.” SPIN has uncovered that there were other reasons for Mondanile’s ousting. According to a statement the site acquired from Real Estate, Mondanile was fired from the band when allegations of sexual misconduct were brought to their attention. Here is the statement:
Matt Mondanile was fired in February 2016 when allegations of unacceptable treatment of women were brought to our attention. While we urged him to seek counseling at the time of termination, we are no longer in contact. We feel that any abuse of one’s power or status to victimize another is completely unacceptable. We applaud the courage of the women who came forward to make us aware so that we could address the issue head on.
In SPIN’s story, Mondanile’s former publicist stated that their professional relationship with Mondanile ended when they got wind of similar allegations. A representative from Domino Records — Ducktails’ former label and Real Estate’s current label — confirmed that Mondanile is no longer signed to Domino.
Mondanile is currently unavailable for comment, but he asked that SPIN delay a longer piece that includes testimony from multiple women until he’s able to comment. That story will be out in the coming days. Read more here.
