The 5 Best Videos Of The Week
We got a good Halloween album this year, but we didn’t get enough good Halloween video. There were plenty of good music videos this past week; they just weren’t Halloween-specific. I was looking forward to seeing more bands eaten by zombies or whatever. Try harder next year, music video directors! This week’s picks are below.
5. Oh Sees – “Nite Expo” (Dir. Alex Theodoropulos)
Someone had a whole lot of fun coming up with these ridiculous monster designs, and then that same someone — Alex Theodoropulos, presumably — had even more fun figuring out how to decapitate them.
4. Aesop Rock – “Hot Dogs” (Dir. Kurt Hayashi)
Easily the best lonely nocturnal urban skateboarding fable I’ve seen this week.
3. Royal Blood – “How Did We Get So Dark?” (Dir. The Sacred Egg)
Here we have a video about a postapocalyptic future where grizzled road-warrior badasses get into highway battles over who can collect the most cute, fluffy bunnies. The execution is very good, but I’m mostly just happy that it exists.
2. N.E.R.D. – “Lemon” (Feat. Rihanna) (Dir. Todd Tourso & Scott Cudmore)
Mette Towley spends this entire video dancing around a swap meet, and now I am ready to watch her star in a whole franchise of straight-to-DVD underground-fighting movies. The level of toughness in this video is just off the meter like that.
1. Rich The Kid – “New Freezer” (Feat. Kendrick Lamar) (Dir. Dave Free & Jack Begert)
The chopsticks! The pyramid car! The neon-red mouthpiece! The lonely strip-club window! The rolled-up leg on Kendrick’s sweatpants! It’s all just too much. It’s the best.
