Lowly – “Wood”
Tracks like “Mornings” and “Prepare The Lake” made me fall in love with Lowly’s debut album Heba. So I’m excited to report the artful Danish post-punks are back with a new single today, little more than a year after their LP — even more so because it sounds like a genuine progression of their uniquely captivating sound.
When Heba dropped early last year, I described Lowly’s sound as “Fear Of Men, but further deconstructed and with Radiohead’s flair for drama.” That remains more or less true of today’s offering “Wood,” though the song brings some brighter ’80s pop elements into the mix without sacrificing their moody experimentalism. Tumbling, echo-laden rhythms and eerie, elongated synth sounds dominate, punctuated by surprising bursts of melody and percussion. “You’re living in a glass house” goes Nanna Schannong’s refrain. It’s another gorgeous shapeshifter from a band with genuine promise.
“Wood” arrives today alongside Lowly’s first US tour dates, one show in New York and two on the West Coast. Relatedly, they had to cancel a UK festival gig due to progress recording their next album. Bad news for Deer Shed festival-goers is good news for the rest of us! Anyway, check out “Wood” below, where you can also find the US dates.
