DeJ Loaf & Leon Bridges – “Liberated” Video
When we first met DeJ Loaf, she was threatening to kill us. Since breaking out in 2014 with the murderous “Try Me,” she’s continued to hone her softer, more melodic side, and this year, the Detroit sing-rapper is finally getting around to following up her mixtapes with a proper debut album. And if its lead single and title track is any indication, the LP will find DeJ gunning for more crossover success.
“Liberated,” an unexpected collaboration with Texas retro-soul singer Leon Bridges, is a uplifting, steel-pan-laden pop song produced full of inspirational messaging about loving and accepting yourself. It’s produced by Ricky “Wallpaper” Reed and co-written by Teddy Geiger, and its accompanying music video, from director Calmatic, features testimonials from various “culture-movers” talking about what it means to be liberated.
“Liberated is about freeing yourself from negativity, doubt or anything that shackles you. It’s about feeling confidant, proud and alive,” DeJ Loaf says in a press release. “That moment when you aren’t looking over your shoulder or worrying about what others are thinking. When you realize you are LIVING. Kick off your heels, let your hair down, turn the volume up, break out into dance, be free to be you! I want people to hear the song and feel fearless. The message is simple — just do it!” Watch and listen below.
Liberated will be out soon on Columbia. In conjunction with the release of the single, DeJ Loaf has launched the new “content hub” PeopleGetLiberated.com, and she’s announced that she’s helping people liberate themselves by covering the costs of all marriage licenses at New York City Hall today.
