Ludovic Alarie is back with “We Don’t Exist,” another new single from his forthcoming album. The Montreal musician’s December release, “We’re a dream nobody wrote down,” was his first single written in English. Much like that track, this dreamy composition was recorded with Blonde Redhead’s Simone Pace, plus Warren C. Spicer, Adèle Trottier-Rivard, and Mishka Stein.

“We Don’t Exist” tackles a very similar emotion found in Alarie’s prior single, but manifests with a different inflection. It feels like a tailor-made soundtrack for those moments when you just completely space out from everything and everyone surrounding around you. A chilling yet ruminative Wurlitzer illuminates this sensation of being in a world of one’s own, and is exacerbated by the change of language used: The first half of the track is in English, the rest in French.

Here’s Alarie with more details on how the linguistic fusion came to be:

Tasia (Bachir) and I wrote the lyrics together for this song. We started by writing them in English. We thought that it would be nice to switch to French for the second part as a reflection of what was happening musically — we found that the instrumental part in the middle sounded transitional. We wrote the lyrics in French by rethinking the meaning of the English lyrics in a different way. It ended up adding a cyclical aspect to the song… The lyrics are about obsessively looking at the same places for someone or something that you have never known.
