Ludovic Alarie – “je te laisse fermer mes yeux” Video
Everybody out there been keeping up with the rollout for Ludovic Alarie’s We’re A Dream Nobody Wrote Down? I would not be surprised to learn that the singles so far have escaped your attention, but I intend to rectify that right now. Alarie is from Montreal, and his records up until now have all been in French. Some of them still are, but he’s doing the bilingual thing this time out. And anyhow the words feel secondary to the vibes in his case.
Consider the title track, a tune that has benevolently haunted me ever since we premiered it back in December. That one does actually get a lot of mileage out of its lyrics: “We’re a dream nobody wrote down” is the kind of koan that can entrance you, much more so when attached to a melody like the one that drifts dreamily through that song. “We Don’t Exist” and “Where Have You Gone” elicited similar feels.
And now we’ve got a fourth preview of the album, which I am obliged to mention is a joint release between Alarie’s own Chouchou Records and Blonde Redhead’s Asa Wa Kuru and features drumming from that band’s Simone Pace. The latest offering is called “je te laisse fermer mes yeux,” which translates to “I let you close my eyes.” Again with the sleepy stuff! Alarie’s not wrong to gravitate in that direction, but don’t take that as me calling his music boring. This song in particular has me hearkening back to twilight indie pop sighs from the Clientele and Caroline Says.
OK, enough blathering. The “je te laisse fermer mes yeux” video by Sylvain Chaussée and Max Voss is available for the watching today, so do that below.
We’re A Dream Nobody Wrote Down is out 5/10 on Asa Wa Kuru/Chouchou.
