“Old Town Road” Holds On To #1 For 15th Week
“Old Town Road” is #1 on the Hot 100 chart for the fifteenth week, as Billboard reports.
“Old Town Road” is now reaching the upper echelon of songs that have remained at #1 on the charts. There are only two songs that have reigned longer than his, both for 16 weeks: 1995’s “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men & 2017’s “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, which was helped out by a remix featuring Justin Bieber. If Lil Nas X is able to hold onto the top spot for two more weeks, he’ll have surpassed them both.
Lil Nas X does face some competition on the horizon, though. Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy,” which has spent a couple weeks licking “Old Town Road”‘s boots at #2, got a remix last week featuring none other than Justin Bieber in hopes that it might recreate the successful boost “Despacito” got with a Bieber co-sign. It was released on Thursday afternoon (7/11), which means that some of the streams were captured in this week’s chart, but we won’t see its full effect until next week. It remains at #2. On Friday (7/12), Lil Nas X released a new “Old Town Road” remix of his own featuring Young Thug and Mason Ramsey, seemingly to mitigate any new Bieber streams. We’ll see how that plays out next week.
Post Malone and Young Thug’s new song “Goodbyes” debuted at #3 this week, and might be a contender to dethrone “Old Town Road” in the future, if anything ever does.
