The 5 Best Videos Of The Week
Björk is one of history’s all-time great music-video artists, but I am very ready for her to finally leave the “trippy alien screensaver” period of her journey. So no “Losss” on this week’s list. Instead, this week’s picks are below.
5. Kash Doll – “Ready Set” (Feat. Big Sean) (Dir. Jesse Ray Diamond)
This one has earned a place on the all-time list of best rap videos filmed at stock-car racetracks, right behind T.I.’s “Top Back (Remix)” and Pete Rock’s “True Master.” Also: This list should be much, much longer.
4. Caroline Polachek – “Ocean Of Tears” (Dir. Caroline Polachek & Matt Copson)
Pirates should not be glamorous. In fact, given the disgusting conditions in which they lived, pirates should really be the opposite of glamorous. And yet Caroline Polachek makes a very convincing argument.
3. Oh Sees – “Captain Loosely” (Dir. Matt Yoka)
This one moves slowly, and its art-film indulgences can be a bit much. And yet it finds new ways to focus your attention on the fucking insane and appalling way we treat people who are just trying to make lives for themselves, and some of its images might sear their way into your brain.
2. Khalid – “Right Back” (Feat. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie) (Dir. Director X)
Khalid comes from El Paso, and he released this shimmering and beautiful good-times video one day before some evil piece of shit killed a bunch of people in his hometown. As a devotee of videos set at barbecues, this would be on the list anyway. And I am fairly certain that this one was not set in El Paso. Still, this serves as a lovely time capsule of one week ago — the time before the terrible fucking things that happened this past weekend.
1. SiR – “Hair Down” (Feat. Kendrick Lamar) (Dir. Jack Begert)
A slow, lovely float of a video that makes me regret all the time I’ve spent sober. Extra points for pulling off all the creative work-arounds, necessary given the fact that Kendrick Lamar is not actually in this video.
