No Age – “Turned To String”
“Turned To String” is the first song we’re hearing from Goons Be Gone, a new No Age album dropping in June. It’s the first LP from the LA noise-pop aggressors since 2018’s Snares Like A Haircut, and like that album it’ll be released by Drag City. Given that they’ve cut the length between albums from four years to two, it seems Randy Randall and Dean Spunt are experiencing a creative renaissance of sorts.
The new song is certainly a winner. “Turned To String” presents a vision of No Age as wise veteran punks, forgoing the explosive aggression of their early days for tense, locked-in rock music that reminds me of Parquet Courts and Wire and the blues. I have no doubt it still plays like cleansing fire in the live setting, though.
