GUM – “Out In The World”
GUM, aka Tame Impala member Jay Watson, is back today with his first song since 2018’s The Underdog. The new one’s called “Out In The World.” Although existing adjacent to The Slow Rush’s psychedelic retro dance party, its gleaming arpeggios, “Billie Jean” backbeat, and airy falsetto also have me imagining a world in which Tears For Fears were on Flying Nun.
As Watson explains in a statement, he had other stylistic touchstones in mind: “It started off as a jangly 12 string folk sort of thing, before morphing into my version of Fleetwood Mac meets Cleaners From Venus. It features very little keyboard and synthesizer for me and more guitars than I’ve used in a while, it was important to have that texture.”
“Out In The World” will be the A-side of a new 7″ backed by a cover of Ballroom’s “It’s A Sad World.” Watch director Laura-Lynn Petrick’s video for “Out In The World” below.
