Jennifer Lopez & Alex Rodriguez Are Trying To Buy The New York Mets
Superstar multi-hyphenate Jennifer Lopez is looking to add another hyphen. After taking the world by storm in recent years with an acclaimed acting role in Hustlers, a Super Bowl halftime performance, and a Video Vanguard Award from MTV, the actress, singer, dancer, fashion designer, producer, and businesswoman is reportedly looking to buy a baseball team.
According to Variety, Lopez and fiancé Alex Rodriguez have retained JPMorgan Chase to raise capital for a possible bid on the New York Mets. The current owners, the Wilpon family, were in talks to sell up to 80% of the team to hedge fund investor Steve Cohen for $2.6 billion as of December — a deal that would have kept control of the club with the Wilpons for five years — but negotiations fell apart.
On many levels, this deal makes sense. JLo and A-Rod are both New York icons. Lopez famously named her debut album On The 6, a reference to the subway line she used to ride. Rodriguez was also born in New York and played 12 seasons in the city, including a World Series win in 2009. But all those years he was suiting up for the Yankees, not the Mets. It’s actually kind of outrageous that he’s bidding on his old team’s crosstown rivals. Is this a plot to destroy the Mets organization from within? Or to make Yankee fans’ heads explode? More likely it’s just two people who grew up cheering for the Mets living out their childhood fantasy.
