Nao – “Woman” (Feat. Lianne La Havas)
The British R&B singer Nao released her sophomore album, Saturn, two years ago. Since then, it picked up a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album (a category that is being renamed starting next year to Best Progressive R&B Album) and it made the shortlist for the prestigious Mercury Prize.
Today, Nao is sharing her first new music since Saturn: a single called “Woman” which features Lianne La Havas, who just put out a new album last month. “Woman” is a smooth and gentle pulse, built around the idea that, as another pop singer recently said, god is a woman: “Baby, I’m living in a magic place/ It’s showin’ me that god’s a woman/ So maybe you should worship me.”
“This is my anthem to empowerment. I want to send a message – to all women but especially to women of colour – that we can be in control, we can be leaders, we can have confidence in our minds and bodies,” Nao said in a statement about the track, continuing:
There’s a lot of darkness in the world but also great things happening in response, many led by women and girls. For the first time in history there’s a global movement for equality, fairness and systematic change that seems to be delivering real results, both personally and politically. Me and Lianne really wanted to sing about that, support it and celebrate it.
