Laura Veirs – “Turquoise Walls”
This fall, the singer-songwriter Laura Veirs, Stereogum’s first-ever Artist To Watch, is coming out with My Echo, her album about her divorce from her ex-husband, the producer Tucker Martine. The album features appearances from people like Jim James, Bill Frisell, Karl Blau, and M. Ward, and we’ve already posted the early track “Burn Too Bright,” as well as the non-album single “I Was A Fool.” Today, Veirs has shared a real gut-ripper of a song called “Turquoise Walls.”
Veirs has said that she wrote the songs from My Echo before she knew she was getting divorced, but there’s a real finality to the lyrics of “Turquoise Walls”: “I tossed and turned and threw the blankets off/ Oh, I could not sleep/ Thinking you were keeping someone else’s pillow warm.”
In a press release, Veirs writes:
This song is about me angsting in my room late at night staring at the bedroom walls that my ex and I painted turquoise. I like how the Nashville guitar and the banjo add a feeling of lightness to this song with rather dark lyrics. I wrote a bunch of versions of this song; I hit the sweet spot on version #5. This song uses only four chords throughout. Sometimes simpler is better when crafting catchy tunes!

My Echo is out 10/23 on Veirs’ Raven Marching Band label.
