SZA Confirms That She Dated Drake When She Was A Teenager
Drake has a long history of setting off mini-gossip bombs with individual rap lines, and he dropped another one on Friday. That day, 21 Savage and Metro Boomin released the new collaborative album Savage Mode II. That album included only a few guest appearances: Drake, Young Thug, Young Nudy, narrator Morgan Freeman. Drake showed up on the song “Mr. Right Now” and mentioned a bit of trivia about his past dating history: “Said she wanna fuck to some SZA, wait/ Cause I used to date SZA back in ’08.” (Drake also implied that he could still get with SZA if he wanted: “If you cool with it, baby, she can still play/ While I jump inside that box and have a field day.”)
That line raised a bunch of eyebrows — partly because it’s new information and partly because SZA was born in November 1990. That means that she would’ve been either 17 or 18 when she supposedly dated Drake. On Twitter last night, SZA made a clarification, claiming that she did in fact once date Drake but that it actually happened in 2009. (SZA thinks he changed the year just so that it would rhyme with “wait.” Too bad nothing rhymes with “nine.”) SZA also says that the relationship was both “completely innocent” and “lifetimes ago”:
So It was actually 2009 lol .. in this case a year of poetic rap license mattered lol I think he jus innocently rhymed 08 w wait . Anybody who really knows me and was around during this time can confirm.. it’s all love all peace .
I just didn’t want anybody thinking anything underage or creepy was happening . Completely innocent . Lifetimes ago .

SZA graduated high school in 2008 and started off her career in music four years later, when she released her debut EP See.SZA.Run. Drake is four years older than SZA; 2009 was the year he released his breakout mixtape So Far Gone.
Drake has actually mentioned SZA once before, on his 2018 single “Diplomatic Immunity”: “I just pulled up on Solána show, the girl’s a natural/ I knew her way back when Hollywood was international.” People reports that SZA unfollowed Drake on Instagram over the weekend.
