Charli XCX Drops Out Of NFT-Gated Festival After Fan Backlash
A few days ago, an NFT-gated music festival in Las Vegas called Afterparty unveiled its inaugural lineup. It featured the Chainsmokers, The Kid Laroi, Sofi Tukker, and Bob Moses, among others. The lineup, however, did not include Charli XCX. According to Rolling Stone UK, the pop star had been scheduled to perform at Afterparty but dropped out partially due to fan criticism on social media.
“I pulled out of the festival,” she confirmed. “That was my decision that I made and I didn’t feel the need to announce it or let them know or whatever – but I did pull out.”
As Charli prepares to roll out her latest studio album Crash, fan feedback is what led to her posting about how social-media criticism affects her mental health last month. She wrote in February: “I’ve noticed lately that a few people seem quite angry at me – for the choices of songs I’ve chosen to release, for the way I’ve decided to roll out my campaign, for the things I need to do to fund what will be the greatest tour I’ve ever done, for things I say, things I do, etc. I’ve been grappling quite a lot with my mental health the past few months and obviously it makes negativity and criticism harder to handle when I come across it – and of course, I know this is a common struggle for most people in this day and age. But yeah anyways.. I just wanted to get on here and say, hey I’m really out here trying my best and working my ass off to make things that are hot and exciting and there’s honestly so much more insane stuff to come !”
Yesterday, if you’ll recall, Charli responded to a Stan who called her “mother,” tweeting, “If u wanna throw around midlife crisis fucking throw it at me,” Charli wrote. “I’m getting older, I’m getting hotter, my tits are stunning, I’m in great shape, I’m dancing, I’m progressing and I’m living my best life – and that the tea.”
@charlixcx they sort of deserved it tho!
Crash is due out 3/18 via Asylum/Atlantic.
