Meanwhile . . . A Tribe Called Quest released their debut, People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm. After forming the Native Tongues collective along with De la Soul and the Jungle Brothers, collaborating with both groups on their albums, ATCQ went into the studio in 1989 and pretty much gave us a perfect album with laid back, conversational rapping with an almost jazzy background. Among the samples are The Beatles, Lou Reed, Stevie Wonder, Funkadelic, Earth Wind & Fire, RAMP and many more. (Can i Kick it? is a 10)

Look at this little butt nugget, newest edition to the fam. What started out as what my wife and I thought would be a great Christmas gift for our little girl has turned into me just cleaning up poop and taking her out every 20-30mins. Either way, here’s to making more brash and reckless decisions in 2024 and jamming a shit ton of new tunes 🍻

And Flying Up The Modern Rock Charts On Its Way To Peaking at No.8… it’s “Pure” by The Lightning Seeds, probably the most cute and charming piece of radio-bait I’ve covered so far. A clumsy, bookish, endearing cascade of childlike declarations of love, so many of them, that Ian Broudie, Mr. Lightning Seed himself, seems relieved that he can get them all out without fumbling over his tongue. This, of course, just makes the whole thing even more endearing. I get the feeling that Ian’s also feeling rather sheepish, worried that he’s just blubbering out a whole lot of gibberish in front of a girl. He’s right to feel sheepish because he really is blubbering a whole lot of gibberish. Which also, of course, makes the whole thing even more endearing.
He’s lying smiling in the dark, whilst there’s shooting stars around your heart! Looking at Ian with starry eyes, pushes him up to starry skies! There’s stardust, in his head!! Ian creates such a magical world with “Pure” that “raindrops splash rainbows,” an image so darn cutesy that I can’t believe it came from a guy who’d been the music industry for over a decade, and surely must be feeling a little jaded by now. But he had. Ian Broudie was not a nerdy teenager, but a fully-grown man of 30-plus years! The Lightning Seeds weren’t a band per se. Ian Broudie was a studio-boffin - with his glasses he certainly looked like a boffin of some description – and producer of a couple of classic Echo & The Bunnymen albums. The Lightning Seeds - who were pretty much the polar-opposite of Echo & The Bunnymen - would become one of the most reliable sources of oh-so-English singalong – and for one record at least, chant-along – records of the 90s. “Pure” is a 9. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbqMD7YrGGQ

Much as I enjoy clicking on these stories for the sole purpose of reading strong dunks from the Stereogum commentariat, I think it would honestly be much better for the site and us as a whole if we just ignore and stop posting about anything Grimes does that is not related to her releasing music (and even then...).

the older i get the more i realize that all those years i spent clowning phish were years that i was envious of their boundless freedom and unlimited capacity for expression.i still find their music largely impenetrable, or maybe it’s that their canon is vast and kind of intimidating.but bless those guys — very little is purer in 2024 than phish being phish, and their example is my beacon
