I had an uncle that worked on laser guidance systems for missiles on a military base out in the desert of California, a place called Ridgecrest that's sort of due east from Bakersfield, to give you a sense of bleakness. One holiday, he rolled up to our house, I would have been 8 years old or so, and his gift to my brother and I was a dashboard-sun-yellowed cassette of Fear of Music that came straight from his car. This was one of the first tapes that I owned, and I listened to it a lot. It became the record of my lifetime, and has been my favorite piece of music since forever, and seeing how the whole thing changes and unfurls as my own experience grew. I was a Talking Heads completist by the time I was 12, and got Sand in the Vaseline for Christmas. New songs! Having amazing early tracks like Sugar on My Tongue and I Want To Live, as well as the 'new' stuff like Lifetime Piling Up (which was also hitting on radio) was amazing. Sax and Violins was a song I would go to when I wanted I contemplative moment – it's bit like like watching a waterfall, or staring out into windy trees. There's movement, but it's not about drawing attention. The chorus always stuck with me, and I liked the production touches, low voices in the mix, shuffling rhythm. I had the anxiety and twitchiness of Fear of Music in my bones, so some calm-down Heads was always welcome to me. The Lester Bangs piece on Fear of Music as well as the Franzen 33 1/3 entry are both joys to read. | |

You can do Vedder than that
The not so small story secretly dominating a lot of the art world in the USA is lack of health care for artists. One jackass hits you in their car and you're more afraid of the bill from the ambulance than the damage itself. Broken ass country.
Her last album came out less than a year ago and was four hours long.
Kurt did a :(
“You’re talking out your ass, and you’re talking shit about drag and gay rights. Get fucked.”
Preach
Fine. God damnit. Fine. I’ll chime in with my “oldhead but also zoomer” perspective.
I don’t tell people I tried to unalive two years ago. I tell them I attempted suicide. There is a gravitas to the technical terms for these things that provides an extra level of substance in dialogue, and that is completely erased by the substitutes we’ve had to come up with to dodge social media algorithms. Are these euphemisms important in a heavily moderated area, such as social media? Yes. Otherwise young people couldn’t talk to each other about what it’s like to struggle with mental illness and suicidal ideation.
An art exhibit though? Fuck off with that. This is not bringing anything to the dialogue. This is further disrespecting a man whose soul was crushed by the fame machine, such he turned the gun on himself.
Rest in peace, Kurt.
Maybe KP is engaging in an elaborate sendup of an out-of-touch pop star, long past her imperial phase, whose desperate need to be relevant by any means necessary causes her to do increasingly stupid things.
this is clearly just a satire of pollution
Kanye West's worst album to date blocked from #1 by Taylor Swift's worst album to date. Truly a victory for quality music!
