Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best Comments

Shut Up, Bruv

There was a lot of teasing of reunion announcements this week. After clues at Reading and Leeds festivals, on Tuesday morning Oasis confirmed news of their first shows in 16 years, and they might even include Bonehead. The big reunion led to a lot of memes and Noel Gallagher's unplanned first interview about it when a fan's kids interrogated him in a Stone Island store.

Linkin Park — who are rumored to have a new vocalist (???) — had been teasing a big announcement for Wednesday afternoon, but it didn't happen (yet). Sum 41's Deryck Whibley announced an announcement for Wednesday afternoon too, but had to reschedule it because people thought he was joining Oasis or Linkin Park.

On Thursday TV On The Radio hinted at something too.

And finally, Morrissey revealed that he's agreed to a Smiths reunion tour offer, but Johnny Marr has "ignored" it.

Your best comments about Oasis, TVOTR, and more are below. SUNDAYS REUNION WHEN.

“For now, it’s appropriate to cry.” That’s what Tony Visconti said after the passing of David Bowie, just two days after Blackstar landed in the stores. I struggle to think of another record that is so closely tied to a particular event; its impossible to separate the two. The best way to listen to Blackstar is to give in to the emotions around Bowie’s passing. Let Blackstar sit shiva with you. On “Dollar Days” D.B. keens about the strain of too many ideas in his head, competing with the dwindling sand grains in the hourglass. “I’m dying to push their backs against the grain/ And fool them all again and again.” A trilling sax and an easy groove bely the meaning in “I Can’t Give Everything Away:” “Saying no but meaning yes/This is all I ever meant/That’s the meaning that I sent.” You could spend hours tying that line back to Bowie’s most triumphant songs over the years. Throughout Blackstar Bowie’s quite physically present. He breathes a labored breath at the beginning of one song; he’s crinkling a paper (rolling a cig?) in another. But to get the full weight of his presence, watch the video for “Lazarus.” As David recedes into that wardrobe over the last doomy chords, it’s okay to let a tear or two drop. He gave his all. Blackstar: 10/10. (And Top 5 Bowie record.)

Listen, were they the most dynamic live act even in their prime? No.Will the crowd be less than 98% the worst cunts you've ever met in your entire life? No.Will they even make it through half the shows without getting into a massive argument and breaking up again?Probably not. Will the tickets cost less than black market organs?God, no.

Am I still going to fight like hell to get tickets despite all of that?YES.IT'S OASIS!I know they're extremely easy targets to mock given their failure to keep up the momentum of their first three years, the intra-band drama, the relative simplicity of their songs compared to their peers, and their fanbase. But they still mean the world to working class Northerners like myself, and their songs still make us feel twelve-hundred feet tall even when the world around us tries its to grind us down.I know theirs was some of the first guitar music that spoke to me growing up - holiday trips with Morning Glory and Definitely Maybe on repeat in the car and Discman - and the effect of their best hasn't dulled despite decades of both brothers being twats, less than inspired releases, and the great songs basically being inescapable parts of the air round here.

Am I gonna be successful in getting tickets?Almost definitely not. Will I be awake at 8am on Saturday trying like mad regardless, and refreshing Twickets every day for the next year when that doesn't succeed? You bet.
