Cardinals – “Big Empty Heart”

Emilyn Cardona

Let's talk about some Cardinals who can't fly, who don't play baseball, and who presumably had nothing to do with the new pope's election. These Cardinals come from the Irish city of Cork, and they make the kind of big-room indie rock that's earned the respect of Fontaines D.C. leader Grian Chatten, probably Ireland's current leading big-room indie rocker. Next month, Cardinals will open the Fontaines D.C. show at London's Finsbury Park, which is not a room but which is big. Today, they've got a new single.

Last year, we posted Cardinals swaggering rocker "Get It." Their new song "Big Empty Heart" is sadder and more downcast, and it's got some cool accordion sounds thickening the mix up. Frontman Euan Manning describes it as "a love song written from beyond the grave." Allow him to continue: "It is a waltz, as waltzes are the most romantic kinds of songs. Oskar wrote the main melody on a Korg synthesiser when he was 12, and the song is built around that." Below, check out the video, which the band co-directed with Charlie Joe Doherty.

"Big Empty Heart" is out now on So Young.
