Chicago musician Joe Glass is part of Kai Slater's Sharp Pins, and he just released his own lo-fi power-pop album on the Lifeguard member's label Hallogallo Tapes. The album boasts the excellent title Snakewards, and it's seeing physical release on cassette, which feels like the right format for this kind of music.
On Instagram, Glass describes Snakewards as "13 scrap-rock sketches straight from the heart to the gut." He adds, "Maybe we can keep rock’n’roll alive for one more day? Who knows." These songs are indeed keeping the flame, infusing their many hooks with jittery/jangly energy a la the dB's or Undertones, the exploratory whimsy of Elephant 6, and the requisite GBV-esque anthems and dirges. The range is wide enough that it really does play like a scrapbook. Page through it below.
