Brooklyn producer evilgiane is the head of the omnivorous Surf Gang collective, and he's done forward-thinking work with people like Kendrick Lamar and Earl Sweatshirt. Just last month, Surf Gang and London rapper Jawnino released the extremely cool collaborative project amnesia. Today, evilgiane surprise-releases his own instrumental album Giane 2.
Giane 2 is a sort of playfully meditative record that doesn't really have anything to do with rap. There might not be any drum sounds across the entire 22-minute thing. But Giane 2 isn't exactly ambient, either. Instead, it's a collection of clipped, jittery, artificial sounds. Sometimes, it's soothing. Other times, it's overwhelmingly nervous. One track is a collab with producer Rue Jacobs, and another reunites evilgiane with the legend Clams Casino, his collaborator on the great Earl Sweatshirt single "Making The Band (Danity Kane)." Hear Giane 2 for yourself below.
Giane 2 is out now on Surf Gang. Someone should really get evilgiane to make a film score.
