Gracie Abrams is the daughter of Hollywood titan J.J. Abrams, so she could have gotten a movie acting role without going to the trouble of becoming a huge pop star first. But Abrams has gone the folk-pop singer-songwriter route instead — channeling Taylor Swift and Phoebe Bridgers and recruiting the National's Aaron Dessner to produce — and has been immensely successful at it (trust the guy whose 10-year-old daughter cannot stop listening to The Secret Of Us). Only after the massive musical success has she opted to pivot to cinema.
Abrams will make her feature film debut in Please, the latest from Babygirl and Bodies Bodies Bodies director Halina Reijn, The Hollywood Reporter reports. Reijn will write and direct the closely guarded project, which will be a period drama with a female lead and will reportedly continue in the vein of edgy romance seen in Babygirl. A24 is financing and producing, led by David Hinojosa, who helmed The Materialists. Reijn is a producer too via her company Man Up Film.
New music from Abrams is also expected this year. She recently shared the Bandcamp-only benefit single "Sold Out" with Bon Iver and Aaron Dessner. As for her acting chops: I thought her performance in the "Risk" video was solid, for what it's worth.
