Our last update on Inuk throat singer and avant-garde composer Tanya Tagaq was her acting debut in True Detective: Night Country. Now she's back with an album announcement: Saputjiji is out March 6 via Six Shooter Records. The new album features Fucked Up's Damian Abraham and was produced by GonjaSufi and Jean Martin, both of whom worked on her previous album 2022's Tongues. Tagaq also shared the lead single "Foxtrot," which is borderline terrifying but also a bit mesmerizing.
Saputjiji (Sa-put-yee-yee) means designated protector. In a social media post, Tagaq shared:
Designated protector. We must stand. We must protect her. The world is choking on the rancid smoke of capitalism. We must breathe. You are being feasted upon. Time to embrace carnivorous tendencies. Defend, protect, embrace.
Tagaq will also be expanding this new musical chapter with a second forthcoming project Split Tooth: Saputjiji — a stage production directed by Kaneza Schaal that will feature songs from the album.
