Baltimore's own Powerwasher play post-punk with the quirky playfulness of Devo and a tough post-hardcore edge. It's the kind of punk that almost feels like funk, rhythmically volatile in a way that makes me think of cartoon explosions. "3-MeO-PCE," the lead single from their new Pressure EP, reminds me of the Futureheads and Cheekface in equal measure — or the Minutemen or Wire, if you really want to roll back the clock.
Also, and this is important: The EP boasts a feature from Rochester rap mad man RXKNephew. As someone who did not closely read the promo materials before listening to my advance copy, encountering that voice in the middle of "Mirage" was quite the delight. We knew he was open to working with indie bands after he teamed up with Courting, but now this is close to a trend. Who'll spring for a Neph verse next?
