COUCOU CHLOE makes spooky pop-leaning electronic music that pairs well with an eye roll and a heavy vape hit. The London-based musician is one of the co-founding members of Nuxxe music collective/label, alongside other avantpop visionaries Shygirl and Sega Bodega. You might also remember her for her remix of Lady Gaga's 2020 anthem "Stupid Love." Today, she's released a new single "Venom."
"Venom" is gauzy and muddied, but also strangely soothing. It has a chirpy 8-bit melody and a throbbing bass. It sounds like the anthem for an apathetic teenage demon. "What's time? I don't know," she lethargically raps. Alongside a reference to a clown with a knife in its back, COUCOU CHLOE ponders mortality. "Fuck I might be dead, but I'm here," goes another striking lyric. "I'm not forever, but what's forever?" As far as I'm concerned, it's impossible to know. Her voice wavers in and out like she's traveling through the underworld.
