Evelyn Gray – “Clotheslines”

Holly Whitaker

Up until last year, Evelyn Gray led Tapir!, the arty UK indie band. Tapir! broke up last year, and now Grey is working on new music with Yuri Shibuichi and Hywel Pryer, the same producers who worked on Tapir!'s 2024 swan song The Pilgrim, Their God And The King Of My Decrepit Mountain.

Gray's new project I Am Building A House has a cool concept. Recently, Gray was given the job of documenting the rooms of an abandoned apartment house that was about to be torn down, and the new record consists of songs about the inhabitants of those rooms. Her new single "Clotheslines," for instance, is about someone who invented useless machines. It's a fluttery, evocative folk song, and you can hear it below.

Evelyn Gray's first solo headlining show is coming up 2/12 at the George Tavern in London.
