Watch Mitski Perform A Soft, Tender “I’ll Change For You” On Colbert

On Friday, Mitski will release her new album Nothing's About To Happen To Me. It's fucking awesome. Mitski is planning an international tour behind the LP, mostly doing multiple-night stands in big cites. Earlier this month, she performed some of her new songs live for the first time at an intimate Nashville show. On Tuesday, she sang the single "I'll Change For You" for the second time, and she did it as a musical guest on Stephen Colbert's Late Show.

When she performs live, Mitski often does elaborate, conceptual dance and performance-art gestures, but she didn't bring any of that to Colbert. Instead, she merely stood center-stage and sang her song — Chris DeVille's favorite of 2026 thus far — with soft, tender precision. Her expert band brought the same lush texture to the song as they did on record, and vintage film clips were projected on the screen behind her. Watch it below.

While we're talking about indie-leaning artists giving sensitive, tender, quiet performances on late-night TV, I'll just note that James Blake was Jimmy Fallon's musical guest last night. Blake's new album Trying Times is out next month, and he sang his lovestruck ballad "I Had A Dream She Took My Hand." Here's that performance:

Nothing's About To Happen To Me is out 2/27 on Dead Oceans. Trying Times is out 3/13 on Good Boy Records.
