Over the years, Columbus singer-songwriter Mark Allen Scott has expanded his solo project Villagerrr into something like a real-deal band, and they've recently become affiliated with one of the most reliably great record labels in indie music, Winspear. The label reissued Villagerrr's 2024 album Tear Your Heart Out last year, and they'll release the next one, Carousel, at the end of May.
Lead single "Locket" brims with pensive energy. There are elements of tender folk music, indie pop, slowcore, and more in the mix, as Scott and his comrades repeatedly instruct us, "Don't forget." Scott explains, "Even though the song might have some sad imagery and stuff, I like to think this song is a love letter to my friends and family and band about how shit is hard but we gotta stick together. To put it bluntly."
