Rustie, the overwhelmingly influential pop-maximalist Scottish producer, took a long hiatus for mental health reasons after he released his surprise album EVENIFUDONTBELIEVE in 2015. In 2023, he returned with the single "Black Ice Mudra," and then he disappeared again. More recently, though, he's been quietly posting new tracks on YouTube, and they show that the rest of the world still hasn't caught up to him. Today, we get a new one.
Rustie's new YouTube exclusive "Trizkel Sun" follows his recent tracks "Athanasia" and "Amentet." Those songs are weird. "Trizkel Sun" is weirder. The instrumental keeps fading in and out of focus. It sounds like an ecstatic dance track that's building up, waiting to drop, but the drop is always just out of reach. Over the top, someone adds screeching, mysterious black metal vocals. Is that Rustie himself, trying the corpsepaint on? Is it someone else? We have no idea! This whole enterprise remains absolutely mysterious. Hear "Trizkel Sun" for yourself below.
