Thundercat – “ThunderWave” (Feat. WILLOW)

Neil Krug

In a few weeks, bass-noodling funkateer Thundercat will release his collab-heavy new album Distracted. The LP features contributions from friends like A$AP Rocky, Tame Impala, Flying Lotus, Channel Tres, Kenneth Blume, and the Lemon Twigs. We've already posted the Lil Yachty collab "I Did This To Myself" and the posthumous Mac Miller team-up "She Knows Too Much." Today, Thundercat shares his WILLOW collab.

You know who WILLOW is. She's Hollywood nepo royalty, the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, who went from child star to spaced-out art kid. She and Thundercat co-wrote the new song "ThunderWave" with pop super-producer Greg Kurstin, and it's a prettily hazy R&B duet, with the two of them singing falsetto harmonies over flange-drunk bass and splish-splash sound effects. I like it more than I thought I would, honestly.

Along with the song, Thundercat and WILLOW have teamed up for an Amazon-sponsored performance video. They sing it together while Thundercat plays bass and WILLOW plays guitar. Thundercat gets in a crazy bass solo that's not on the album version. Check out the studio and Amazon versions of "ThunderWave" below.

Distracted is out 4/3 via Brainfeeder.
