In 2019, David Gilmour broke the record for most expensive guitar ever sold when his 1969 Black Fender Stratocaster was auctioned off for $3,975,000. Now, the Pink Floyd guitarist's iconic instrument has broken the record again, this time selling for $14.55 million, according to Rolling Stone.
The Jim Irsay Collection auction took place today at Christie's in New York. The estimated price for the guitar was $2-4 million, but it far exceeded expectations. It more than doubles the previous record held by Kurt Cobain's Martin D-18E, which was sold for $6 million in 2020 and used in Nirvana's beloved MTV Unplugged performance.
The late Indianapolis Colts owner and CEO's whole collection has been estimated at a billion dollars. Other big sales of the night include Jerry Garcia's Tiger guitar at $10 million.
Also at the Irsay auction, country/roots-rock singer-songwriter Zach Bryan bought Jack Kerouac's original scroll for the iconic 1951 novel On The Road for $12 million, Simon Warner reports. The scroll has been described as "the Holy Grail of Beat Generation history." Last year Bryan bought the former Saint Jean Baptiste Church in Kerouac's hometown of Lowell, MA to enable the Jack Kerouac Foundation to build a museum in the writer's honor.
