I still haven't managed to successfully type the name "Jim Legxacy" without either copy-pasting or triple-checking my spelling. But the restlessly inventive young London rap shapeshifter isn't going anywhere, so I guess I better figure it out. Last year, Legxacy released his black british music mixtape, and it made our list of the year's best rap albums. Now, he's got a new non-album single.
The new Jim Legxacy track "idk idk" shows a lot of what makes Legxacy such a singular artist. The soul-sample beat, which counts Legxacy among its many producers, starts out as nervous and jittery lo-fi before layering on more and more elements until it becomes life-affirming, gospel-adjacent dance music. Legxacy floats over all that roiling chaos with an ebullient singsong cadence. Great song. Check it out below.
In the months ahead, Jim Legxacy will head over to North America to play Lollapalooza, Osheaga, and Outside Lands.
