Greg Mendez – “Gentle Love” & “Frog”

Stephen Yang

Earlier this month Greg Mendez, the Philly singer-songwriter who made one of our favorite EPs of 2024, announced Beauty Land, his latest full-length and debut for Dead Oceans. After announcing the record with the great lead single "I Wanna Feel Pretty," today he's back with a pair of new ones called "Gentle Love" and "Frog."

"Gentle Love" is a sweet folksy tune where Mendez contextualizes some of the traits he did and did not inherit from his parents. "I got my mama’s smile/ But not her holy tongue," he sings, before later lamenting: "I got my father’s hands/ But not his gentle love." It goes straight into the foreboding, keys-forward interlude "Frog," where he begs: "Please forgive me for my faults."
