This month, two very different explorations of pop-star life will come to multiplexes — the probable-trainwreck Michael Jackson biopic Michael and the David Lowery A24 psychological thriller Mother Mary. In the latter, Anne Hathaway plays the titular fictional singer, with Micaela Coel as an estranged friend. As the trailer makes clear, Mother Mary has a soundtrack full of songs recorded by Hathaway and written by real-life pop-music figures like Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA twigs.
Along with the film, A24 will release a Mother Mary soundtrack that's being cleverly sold as the fake pop singer Mother Mary's Greatest Hits album. We've already heard lead single "Burial," written by Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and George Daniel. Now, we get a taste of what FKA twigs did for this character.
The new Mother Mary song has the very funny title "My Mouth Is Lonely For You." FKA twigs co-wrote it with her regular collaborators Koreless and Xquisite Korpse, as well as pop-music pros Jeff Bhasker and Tobias Jesso, Jr. (Some of you might remember Jesso as an indie singer-songwriter type, but "My Mouth Is Lonely For You" doesn't sound like anything on Goon.) It's a slinky-swirly dance-pop track that would've made perfect sense on twigs' Eusexua, and I think it's pretty fun and effective. Hathaway even sings in with the same kind of breathy rapture that twigs regularly brings, and I can't imagine that's an easy way to sing. Mother Mary and Mother Mary: Greatest Hits are both out 4/17 via A24. But what kind of pop star puts out a greatest-hits collection that's only seven songs? Or really probably six and a half songs?
