It's somehow been six years since the Strokes released their "new" album, the Grammy-winning The New Abnormal, and the band has been announced for a zillion festivals this year, including an appearance at Coachella this Saturday. So perhaps it was obvious a new LP was on the way. Today they've confirmed it.
A short trailer posted to the band's social media accounts reveals that their new album Reality Awaits will be out this summer. No further information is provided, but the 13-second video features a retro sports car, a slippery plastic Strokes groove, and the tagline, "In The Flesh, It's Even Sexier." It’s a reference to a Jaguar XJS ad from 1975.
UPDATE 4/7: The band has officially detailed Reality Awaits and shared the official audio for lead single "Going Shopping," which they debuted in concert Monday night after it emerged via cassettes mailed to fans. The new album will be out June 26 via RCA and frontman Julian Casablancas' label Cult Records. It was produced by The New Abnormal producer Rick Rubin in Costa Rica and completed around the world. The cover art, designed by Johann Rashid, incorporates Richard Prince's 1989 painting "Untitled (Cowboy)." Given that Casablancas recently said he no longer speaks to guitarist Nick Valensi, I wonder how much the adults were talking during the making of this one.
