French folk artist Minda Tindle released her lovely album Compass Rosa last November. A few songs on it featured Sufjan Stevens, including the single "Heaven Thunder." Today, Tindle released an expanded version of the album with three new songs, "Ladies," “Chant Andalou," and “My Light." The latter features Stevens teaming up with Tindle again.
Tindle shared that "My Light" is about "trying to hold onto the light of those we’ve lost… right behind the sun… like a direction, like a compass." The song's lyrics nestle into grief. "We use to break things and blame each other for it/ Now, I am looking for pieces of you in everything I do," goes the opening line. Stevens, whose partner died three years ago and who made a classic album about his fraught relationship with his late mother, is a natural collaborator given the subject matter. You can hear his calming voice wash over the chorus.
