Last summer Alex G released his latest LP Headlights. I thought it was great at the time, and I still do, too! But even with ten studio albums and a major label deal to his name, Alex G still maintains some proximity to his reputation as a DIY hero who does things his own way, and whose cult fanbase often dedicates more attention to his unofficial YouTube leaks than the stuff he properly releases. Today, he drives that point home by reviving his personal YouTube channel to release "Good Green Friend," a track from the Headlights sessions that didn't make the cut.
Alex G first debuted "Good Green Friend" at his Headlights release show at the Ground in New York City last July. I was there, but my memory of the night is kind of foggy because the room got brutally overheated. I was miserable, but what was I gonna do? Miss out on a tiny Alex G set in the year of our lord 2025? Absolutely not. Anyway, his fan Wiki reminds me that he said the song is about a time he "got super high and had a great time" after a long break from smoking weed. Now Alex has quietly shared the studio version of the song to his personal YouTube channel, his first time posting there in six years. It's a shorter one with those classic layered, spookily-distorted vocals he's known for: "Haven't laughed so hard in a minute," those voices sing over some pretty acoustic guitar chords. "Got my good green friend again." Check it out below.
