Converge – “Doom In Bloom”

Nick Fancher

Our absolute bounty of new Converge music continues. Back in February, the Boston metallic hardcore legends released Love Is Not Enough, their first proper non-collab album in nine years. It's fucking fire. Next month, Converge will follow that LP with Hum Of Hurt, their second brand new album of the year. It'll almost certainly kick even more ass. We've already posted the Hum Of Hurt title track, and now Converge smack us upside the collective head with their new song "Doom In Bloom"

Converge frontman Jacob Bannon has said that Hum Of Hurt "leans more into being an emotional hardcore album," but that's not really what I'm hearing on "Doom In Bloom." Instead, Converge's latest is a guttural math-rock lurch, a song so seasick that it could make you barf on your laptop. Imagine Unsane trying to transform themselves into Don Caballero; that's what I'm hearing here.

In a press release, Bannon says, "It’s dark and pointed right at you. Lyrically, I’m exploring how my own middle-aged introspection doesn’t always bring a brighter light. I see my own trappings reflected in those around me. Here I am imploring them to slip the noose to see another day." Below, check out the bloody George Gallardo Kattah-directed video

Hum Of Hurt is out 6/5 on Deathwish, Inc./Epitaph.
