Back in 2024, Stereogum's metal column profiled REZN, a Chicago doom band that specializes in building immersive sonic environments. Around the same time, REZN released Burden, their first album for the Sargent House label. Today, they announce plans to follow that LP with Cycles In The Infinite Dream, a new record that should take them even further into unexplored spaces.
Like some of their more psychedelic peers, REZN eschew the harsher musical touchstones of DIY metal, instead bringing rich, proggy harmonies and the extra layers added by multi-instrumentalist Spencer Ouellette who plays synth and saxophone. On REZN's new single "Cloudfall," Ouellette adds lap steel to the band's arsenal. The song has some truly heavy riffs, but it's got a woozy, lysergic sense of drift even when it's in attack mode.
In a press release, the band says, "We moved towards the dream and subconscious state as a lyrical concept and melodic theme. The pseudo-waking state is a reflection of a second existence — something that you can flee to or be imprisoned by."
