Björk Plays Surprise DJ Set At Venice Biennale, Promises New Album Next Year

In December last year, Björk revealed that she was working on the followup to 2022's Fossora. Earlier this week, the Icelandic avant-pop artist performed a surprise DJ set at the Venice Biennale.

Clad in an extravagant dress of recycled fiberglass, Björk helped kick off the biannual international art and cultural exhibition in Italy, turning the event into a rave. Her look came from the fall 2026 Bottega Veneta collection by Louise Trotter. On X she wrote that the set was for Ásta Fanney Sigurðardóttir, the artist chosen to represent Iceland at the exhibition.

Björk also gave updates on her upcoming album last month, casually mentioning "the new album in 2027," and announced a solar eclipse rave in August. Here's what she wrote:

dear friends

i am so excited to invite you to echolalia may to september .
i am so grateful and thrilled for your incredible reaction to the rave , me and alejandra and others are having at the eclipse this summer .
i saw all your comments and wanted to massage out a potential misunderstanding that has been floating around :
echolalia is not the title of my next album . it is an umbrella-exhibition-name . an umbrella that gives 2 of my fossora songs the treatment i always dreamed of , and some new music .
i always wanted to put “ancestress” and “sorrowful soil” into a room , spatial situation ? those songs didn´t seem like live songs , the kind best experienced in private with many speakers . and with andy huang´s and viðar logi´s visuals of course . we re-recorded the choir and have textile scores to be enjoyed too .
i will share a version of a new song in one of the rooms . visually , it is a collaboration with 2 new incredible artists , which i will share later . but i want to be sincere with my fans ( who are all of course delicious music-nerds ) about the musical side of things :
the new music is a version of a song . the final version will be on the new album in 2027 . before you buy your tickets , i want to make sure that you know that i will not be sharing the final instrumentation of my next album until next year .
i know it is a long time , but 5 years passed between my last 2 albums and i enjoyed that enormously , i seem to spend longer every time in the world-building and it is extremely satisfying to align all the different elements ( how equilibrian of me ! )
i think that as hosts , me and james have a lot to offer . his mask exhibition looks sublime !
