Purity Ring’s Megan James Launches New Solo Project MMJ

Around these parts, "MMJ" often stands for My Morning Jacket. Around other parts, "MMJ" might stand for medical marijuana. Now, "MMJ" stands for a new thing: The solo project of Megan James, one half of the electro-pop duo Purity Ring. James initially announced the new endeavor last month, revealing she'd signed to Captured Tracks and would be opening for Purity Ring's upcoming tour with a solo set. Today we get the upcoming album's first single "Nobody Knows."

"Nobody Knows" sees James go for a more acoustic, singer-songwriter sound than what Purity Ring is typically known for. "Nobody knows/ A fallen star/ From wildfire ash/ Raining down on the yard," she sings in the track's opening lines. "It presents the ways we know so little, but also the things we deny and can see if we choose to, and what we should see and be in order to survive in this place; what we deserve to have and be as individuals and collectively," James explains of the song. "'Nobody Knows' is circular, a fractal glimpse of humanity in the span of a song. I hope you feel it."
