Hole Drummer Patty Schemel Auctioning Kurt Cobain’s Foxes T-Shirt, Bidding Reaches $8,000

There's no Hole reunion. That's not happening. Ex-bandmates Courtney Love and Melissa Auf Der Maur have been hanging out lately, but Love has made it clear that they weren't actually teasing a full-band reunion. Meanwhile, former Hole drummer Patty Schemel is auctioning off an old T-shirt once owned by Kurt Cobain.

Right now, Julien's is auctioning off a T-shirt with the logo of Foxes, a 1980 coming-of-age movie about a friend group of teenage girls, including a very young Jodie Foster. The shirt comes from Patty Schemel's collection. Here's the auction house's description of the item:

A t-shirt owned and worn by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, gifted to Patty Schemel in the early 1990s. Cobain and Schemel were close friends, and Schemel was a huge fan of films which she would often encourage Cobain to watch, such as the 1980 film Foxes starring Jodi Foster who Schemel was a huge fan of. The friends were also big fans of fun and obscure thrifted t-shirts, and frequently shopped together at thrift stores away from the city, sharing their finds with each other.

At an early 1990s photoshoot a stylist had several shirts for Cobain to wear. He chose the Foxes shirt because he and Schemel loved watching the film together. He asked if he could keep the shirt after the photo shoot and gifted it to Schemel soon after.

Patty Schemel was the drummer for the legendary rock band Hole from 1992 to 1998, and was one of the first lesbian rock musicians to come out officially in Rolling Stone Magazine in 1995. Her deep friendship with Cobain is a central part of her 2017 memoir Hit So Hard.

T-Shirt measurements: 16" chest, 18" hip, 24.5 length.

The site also includes a signed letter from Schemel about the shirt. She writes:

Seattle, WA. Summer, 1993...

I went to Kurt and Courtney's house to pick up Courtney for Hole rehearsals. I went upstairs and sat on the bed while Courtney got ready to leave. Kurt came in and grabbed a shirt from a pile of clothes. He said "You should have this." It was a blue promo t-shirt from the 1980 movie Foxes. We shared an interest in 1970's and 1980's teen angst cult movies. Kurt had the soundtrack. I loved Jodie Foster who starred in it.

I've kept the shirt over the years. It's a very special piece.

We're not sure if it's the same photo shoot where Cobain got the shirt, but he did wear it for a shoot with Anton Corbijn on July 16, 1993. One of the photos from that shot has been an iconic publicity image of Nirvana. In fact, it's their Spotify avatar and banner. That's the picture at the top of this post.

Patty Schemel must be cleaning out her storage. She recently auctioned off some Hole and Nirvana stuff on eBay.

As I write this, bidding for the Foxes shirt is up to $8,000. It'll probably go higher, considering that Julien's once auctioned off a pack of Cobain's cigarettes for $5,200. Someone should ping this Reddit poster.
