Hand Habits & Emile Mosseri Cover Ani DiFranco On New EP Your Lemon

Meg Duffy and Emile Mosseri have both been prolific forces in modern music — Duffy as frontperson for Hand Habits and guitar hero for artists like Kevin Morby and Perfume Genius, Mosseri as an Oscar-nominated composer and member of the Dig — and those histories intertwine. Since meeting a decade ago in New York, the two musicians have both relocated to LA. They've worked together before, and now they've released a collaborative EP.

Your Lemon features one song each sung by Duffy and Mosseri, each one backed by Kosta Galanopoulos on drums. Those are sandwiched around a drum-free, synth-powered cover of Ani DiFranco's "Joyful Girl." The pair shared these thoughts on the project:

We first crossed paths over ten years ago in a New York cafe, though neither of us knew it at the time. Meg was at a musical crossroads and had just agreed to join Kevin Morby's band, excited and ready to talk the ear off whoever would listen, including the barista who, it turns out, was Emile. He was working there while navigating his own musical crossroads between playing in a band and composing more seriously.

Years later, we reconnected in Los Angeles through mutual friends. The moment we started sharing our works in progress, it was clear we were musically kindred, drawn to the same harmonic intricacies and emotionally resonant arrangements. It was only then that our chance encounter a decade prior came back to us — it all felt very aligned.

In the years since, we've recorded music and performed live together a handful of times. Your Lemon is the culmination of that relationship — something tangible and official: three songs, one from each of our catalogs and a cover of Ani DiFranco's "Joyful Girl." We're both inspired by what we were able to create and excited for it to be out in the world.

From the first tenor ukulele strums, Your Lemon makes for a mesmerizing listen, one that feels familiar but unique within the two artists' bodies of work. Hear it below.

Your Lemon is out now on Greedy Heart Records.
