You might know Micky Dolenz as the sole surviving member of the Monkees, the ultra-popular psychedelic pop act that was assembled to star in a '60s sitcom. The Monkees' entire run was fascinating — the most monoculture shit in the world, created to riff on the counterculture, which then became part of the counterculture when the band members wrestled control away from the TV producer who put them together in the first place. But Dolenz is more than just a Monkee. He is also, apparently, enough of a Paul Westerberg head to cover a song that even most Westerberg heads might not recognize.
In 2008, the former Replacements leader Paul Westerberg released a solo album called 49:00 as a 49-cent Amazon download. It came out with zero advance notice, and most of the world never realized that it exists. 49:00 plays out as one single track with no tracklist, so fans have had to come up with their own guesses at what the songs were supposed to be called. It was deleted two days later due to licensing issues. “Ten publishers came after us immediately 'cause I used all these snippets of songs that I recorded,” Westerberg later explained. Years later he put it on SoundCloud with the message “I tried to release this in 2008 and had a lot of problems.”
Later this year, Micky Dolenz will release Timeless, a new EP that features songs written by XTC's Andy Partridge, Shelby Lynne, and the late Adam Schlesinger, among others. It's one more interesting late-career move from Dolenz, a man who recently released an EP of R.E.M. covers and sued the FBI for the release of the Bureau's secret fine on the Monkees. Dolenz's newly released single "Terri" is really a cover of the opening track from Paul Westerberg's 49:00, commonly known as "(Tell Me) Who You Gonna Marry."
