You've heard of "Summer Babe (Winter Version)." Now let me introduce you to Winter, singing about summer, on "hollow (mixtape version)."
Samira Winter, the rising NYC musical artist and occasional Stereogum VJ, has a new single out this week. Originally "hollow" was the low-key closing track on Adult Romantix, Winter's 2025 LP. This new "mixtape version" revs up the song's energy level in a way that, to me, illuminates the difference between "dreampop" (the original) and "shoegaze" (this one). Here's
“It was really fun getting to reimagine this song in the studio and explore new edges of Romantix," Winter says. "I originally wrote it in a faster tempo so it was cool bringing this
version to life, leaning into the more sulky crimson palette of the album." She also commented on the video, directed by Sophie Hur:
I was reading this old Russian fairytale at the time of writing the lyrics, which we took as inspiration when making the music video. I think one way or another, with Winter, I'm always exploring that liminal space between dream and waking life. And it was really special getting to work with director Sophie Hur again and dream up this epilogue for the album.
